Why your author website does not show up on Google

Amazon, Goodreads and Instagram outrank most author sites. The seven reasons why, in the order we check them.

Search your own name and your book title in a private browser window. For most authors, Amazon comes first, then Goodreads, then Instagram. The author’s own site is fourth, on page two, or missing.

That matters because your site is the only place you control. It’s where a reader can join your list, see every book in order and hear about the next one. Amazon will never send you their email address.

These are the seven reasons we find most often, in the order we check them.

1. Google can’t read the page

Many sites built with AI builders and some modern templates send Google an almost empty page. The words only appear after the browser runs the site’s code. Google often indexes what it gets first, which can be a title and nothing else.

How to check: search site:yourdomain.com on Google. If the results show your site’s title with no description, or pages are missing, this is likely the cause.

Fix: have the site deliver its text in the first response, not only after code runs. On most platforms this is a setting or a rebuild, not a redesign.

2. The page title doesn’t say who you are

The title of your home page is the blue link Google shows. A title of “Home” or “Welcome” tells Google nothing. Your name and your best-known title should be in it.

Fix: “Your Name, author of Book Title” is a good default for the home page. Each book page gets “Book Title by Your Name”.

3. Your books don’t have their own pages

If all your books share one page, Google can only rank that one page. A reader who searches a specific title lands on Amazon instead.

Fix: one page per book, with the cover, the description, the series and buy links for every store.

4. Google doesn’t know the page is about a book

Search engines read a small block of hidden details on each page: the book’s title, author, series and formats. Without it, your book page is just a page with some text. With it, Google can show your book properly and connect it to your name.

Fix: add book and author details to each book page in the format Google reads. Any decent developer can do this in an afternoon.

5. There’s no sitemap, or Google has never seen it

A sitemap is the list of your pages that you hand to Google. Without one, new book pages can take months to be found.

Fix: create a sitemap and submit it in Google Search Console, which is free. Search Console also shows you which searches already find you.

When someone shares your site on Facebook, WhatsApp or X, the preview image comes from a setting on the page. Many sites still show the builder’s default image or nothing at all. It doesn’t change your ranking directly, but it changes whether people click, and clicks matter.

Fix: set your book cover or your author photo as the share image on every page.

Google trusts sites that other sites point to. Your publisher page, interviews, podcasts and guest posts should all link to your own site, not only to Amazon.

Fix: every time you appear somewhere, ask for one link to your site. Put your site in your social bios and in the back of every book.

What to do first

Fix them in this order: 1 and 2 first, because nothing else works until Google can read the page and knows whose it is. Then 3, 4 and 5. Then 6 and 7 over time.
